Jeff Bingham
After decades of service as a civil servant and consultant, Jeffrey Marvin Bingham "Jeff" of Round Hill, Virginia - son of Dr. Leonard John Bingham and Helen Williams, formerly of Idaho Falls, Idaho - passed away quietly on May 16, 2024 in Orem, Utah of natural causes after fighting throat cancer.
He is survived by his sister, Susan Whittle, her husband Trent of Orem, Utah; eldest son Brook of Salt Lake City, Utah, his wife Shauna, their two children, Koa and Tosh; son Ryan of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and daughter Blaire of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Three of Jeff's siblings, John, David and Kathy, preceded him in death.
Jeff was beloved in multiple communities, from his dear fellowship of friends, to United State Senate and NASA colleagues, and the space community. He was a mentor for many people of all backgrounds and relished in sharing his deep legislative knowledge and life wisdom to help others.
His family remembers Jeff as someone who was a small-town boy in love with mountains and wide open spaces living in the modern world of gadgets and technology. When not reading books, Jeff was known to chase horses and sunrises with his camera. Whether it was the stars, Utah mountains or Virginia skies, he was always looking up for that inspirational shot. Although his professional life carried him back East to Virginia and Washington D.C. and immersed him in a world of politics and space exploration, his heart was always in the West.
In his professional life, Jeff took pride in his contributions to the space community. From the mid-1970s to the final months of his life, Jeff held many senior staff positions in the United States Senate, NASA, and Virginia's Commercial Space Flight Authority among other roles. He drove commercial partnerships, revolutionary scientific programs, and a new space launch vehicle to reach the Moon and Mars. Jeff's positive impact will last for decades to come.
Please see Coltrin Mortuary's website for more of Jeff's story.
Per Jeff's wishes, his burial will be in Idaho Falls, Idaho, in the Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery, on Friday 24 May 2024, after a small intimate graveside ceremony. Friends and well-wishers can attend a visitation on Friday 24 May 2024 from 12:00-2:00 PM at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street, Idaho Falls, Idaho. A memorial service in the Washington, D.C. area is also being planned for June. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any space-related charity in Jeff's name to support future space explorers and leaders.
